Eric, the benefit of using the VPs with different VCI per source are           
1) no (fewer, depending) connection establishment (signaling) is needed        
in the network, 2) allows multiplexing and demultiplexing at merging           
points, 3) simple CAC at the source (in general).                              
The problem is to manage the VCIs per source, i.e., assign them                
uniquely which needs to be done off line (currently, but ITU is working        
on it so keep tuned). Any switch that supports VP can be used in               
this approach so no interoperability problems. Raif
