Paul > >IP, like it or not, is entrenched in the global environment [Internet]. >This is not likely to change. > Sure it is. Five years ago, 80% of all corporate networks were running SNA. While SNA is still a major player, IP has emerged as a dominant technology. As network infrastructure changes and as user requirements change, protocols must adapt. IP served a purpose in getting away from the purely hierarchical network structures of the 60s, and 70s. Now requirements for connection-oriented traffic are arising as we see that needs for performance and security are sometimes greater than the need to share on a peer basis. We can try to shoehorn this onto IP, IP can grow, or we can adopt additional protocols that provide these services in a complementary fashion. Of course everyone knows my vote ;-) Steve ------------------------------------- Name: Steve Jackowski E-mail: stevej@netmanage.com (Steve Jackowski) Phone: (408) 439-6834 Date: 03/29/96 Time: 08:39:43 This message was sent by Chameleon ------------------------------------- |
