Sure it is.  Five years ago, 80% of all corporate networks were 
running SNA.  While SNA is still a major player, IP has emerged as a 
dominant technology.   As network infrastructure changes and as user 
requirements change, protocols must adapt.

IP served a purpose in getting away from the purely hierarchical 
network structures of the 60s, and 70s.  Now requirements for 
connection-oriented traffic are arising as we see that needs for 
performance and security are sometimes greater than the need to share 
on a peer basis.  We can try to shoehorn this onto IP, IP can grow, or 
we can adopt additional protocols that provide these services in a 
complementary fashion.

Of course everyone knows my vote ;-)
