hi, LDP operates on the control plane.It works at layer 4. Hence it is able to use UDP/TCP messages to exchage data with other LDP peers. MPLS operates at the data plane.It works between layer 2 and 3. Once a LSP has been set up by LDP, data (and this includes subsequent LDP messages) are switched by MPLS.
