Ramesh, there is no such thing as a dumb question. Keep asking. MPLS allows for switching packets instead of routing them, so it is faster. Secondly, you can control the actual route the packets take across the network based on source, destination, protocol, port number. You can't easily do that with standard IP. Lastly, using the same technology, the provider can offer VPNs, and if offering that for one customer, he can very easily offer it for the next with little extra work in provisioning. That, in a nutshell, are the benefits of MPLS.
