MPLS Basic Question and what makes it so "special"

For years now people have been talking about converged networks.
MPLS is one means for achieving convergence for several reasons.

1) The ability to control traffic and traffic flows
2) The ability to control a network from one NOC (GMPLS)
3) The ability to charge for different levels of IP service

In general I have found that Datacom people find MPLS to be a complex system,
but
Telecom people like the benefits of MPLS. The complexity like traffic
engineering and traffic modeling is part of their current routine.

MPLS is special because it allows carriers a real chance to "play" in the
datacom world.

Yours Truly,
Rick G
