VPLS (or TLS) implementations will extend the L2 VPN model to more than just pipes.  The concept, expressed in a number of drafts, will add any to any connectivity to L2 VPNs.  The network will be required to perform additional functions such as MAC learning, flooding, auto discovery etc  Effectively you end up with a Network Based Virtual Bridging service, the extent of the bridging capability is still unsettled.

Your understanding is correct.

Layer 2 VPNs are a point to point link between 2 points while Layer 3 VPNs can provide any to any connectivity. For example using MPLS based IP VPN service is an example of a Layer 3 VPN.

Subject: [MPLS-OPS]: MPLS VPN implementations

Dear All,

I just wanted to know the difference between a Layer 2 & Layer 3 VPN implementation.

As far as my understanding goes

Layer2 VPN is a virtual pipe extended between 2 sites (point to point)

Layer3 VPN provides any to any connectivity for all sites (point to multipoint / mulitpoint to multipoint)

Am I correct in my understanding?

One more scenario is that of offering TLS (Transparent Lan service). Is this a special case of L2 VPN?

I thank everybody in anticipation of receiving these answers

Neel
