Title: RE: [MPLS-OPS]: MPLS traffic classification
(Dzien Dobry)
Depending on the layer level of your VPN, classification could be not the same.
L2VPN:
The PE is not aware of the incoming IP header then the classification could only be based on the L2 header (or on the incoming interface)
(what could be done is a cos mapping on the CE of the IP Precedence bits to 802.1q for example or to specific DLCI,VPI/VCI,...)
The traffic is send by the incoming PE to a LSP, MPLS CoS could be done via EXP field (E-LSP) or via label id (L-LSP)
CoS on the VPN CORE network based on EXP MPLS field or on LABEL ID.
L3VPN:
The PE use the IP header to forward the packet then this PE could, based on the IP header (IP Precedence,TOS,source/dest addr) or on lower level headers forward this packet on a E-LSP or on a L-LSP.
Same remark on the CoS in the VPN CORE than for L2VPN.
MPLS is a header between Link Layer (2) and Network Layer (3), we could say MPLS is 2.5, not Layer 2.

Mourad

Objet : [MPLS-OPS]: MPLS traffic classification
HI,
I have a question. Is it a need to classify VPN traffic based on IP
header fields in Egress PE?
I think that normaly traffic is clssified in Ingress PE and flow by
core handling based on EXP field in MPLS shim header. Is it correct?
Which scenario will be done when I should use a Egress PE
classification?
Second question which layer MPLS is? Layer 2 or not? It's for
clarification ;-)
Best regards,
Christopher May
