approach U could refer
to the old (excellent)  book " Switching in IP Networks: IP Switching, Tag 
Switching and Related Technologies" by Bruce S. Davie, Paul Doolan, Yakov 
Rekhter .

AFAIK , MPLS (which is taken from CSCO TAG switching and IBM ARIS ,both are 
control driven  )  is control driven .
