Dear Ahmad

1. The Route Reflectors or AS-confederation have been aimed to provide better design by avoidining  mesh peering between iBGP Peers. This may not be required or useful for  a small network, having few peers but this is quite useful for large Network/AS having large number of peers. I will forward you some good BGP document off-line for yr academic interest.

2. Similarly for better Management purpose, A large routing IGP Routing Domain can be divided into multiple areas. Such segmentation helps in many aspects.

i. Keeping small routing Table on small Sites, having low end Routers. Thus improving the route forwarding performance.
ii. Route Aggregation
iii  Route Convergence

3. Reg yr Point 3, I have not faced any such mentioned difficulties.

I am sure, this champ distro will further refine/correct my views.

Shail

Subject: [MPLS-OPS]: Route Reflector and Areas

Hi,

I'm new in IP and MPLS and a little bit confuse with the existence of Route Reflectors (RR) and segmenting the network into multiple areas. My questions are as follows:

1. Why do we need to have multiple areas in the network?
2. If we have RR implemented in the network, can we maintain a single area in the network.
3. Is it true that, if the network is segmented into multiple areas, it is difficult to perform the following:
  • Supporting end-to-end services requiring QoS guarantees
  • -Perfoming network resource optimisation
  • Providing fast recovery
    -
 Thank you.
