Label distribution - Initial conditions

Assume I am an LSP.  I buy 100 MPLS back bone routers.  In case i want to set up paths on it, initiallly, I do it manually (i presume).  When does LDP come into picture?  Is it when a router breaks down?  What happens when i add a new router?  Can i use LDP?  When, how and where is LDP useful?
