Just to add to the above, the discussion on BGP vs LDP for VPLS signaling
missed the fact that VPLS involves not just signaling, but discovery
as well.

With this in mind, what needs to be compared is BGP for signaling
and auto-discovery on one hand LDP for signaling and {BGP, DNS,
LDAP, etc...} for auto-discovery on the other hand.
